The rise in cannabidiol (CBD) popularity suggests more farmers are growing non-intoxicating stress of cannabis, or hemp, for CBD production. This new market has led to business genetic tests for early determination of hemp plant sex. However, a new research study has actually found that these tests may not all produce precise results.
CBD is used as an alternative treatment for discomfort and anxiety and various medical conditions. Unfertilized female marijuana plants produce high quantities of the CBD precursor in their flowers, making it important to identify and eliminate male plants at the seedling stage.
” The arise from our undergraduate-led job can assist hemp growers make precise sex decision of seedlings,” said Allison Nalesnik, senior undergraduate student at Salisbury University. “This could help increase the yield of CBD, which ought to decrease rates for the general public.”
Nalesnik was set up to present this research at the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology yearly meeting in San Diego this month. The conference, to be held in conjunction with the 2020 Speculative Biology conference, was canceled in action to the COVID-19 break out, the research team’s abstract was released in this month’s issue of The FASEB Journal
Commercially readily available genetic tests use DNA markers referred to as primer sets to identify male plants weeks prior to this could be figured out visually. This helps farmers avoid hanging out and money on growing plants that do not produce flowers and that might potentially lower CBD production by fertilizing female plants
The new research study was performed through a molecular genetics course provided at Salisbury University. Over the course of a semester, trainees in the course followed identical protocols to determine the sex of 13 hemp plants.
” 2 of the guide sets– SCAR119 and MADC2– were effective for figuring out the sex of marijuana seedlings,” said Nalesnik. “The inadequate primer set would need to be evaluated even more to more confidently say whether or not it is really scientifically useful.”
Next actions for this research study consist of examining DNA markers that are just found on the male chromosome to see if these deal a more effective way to identify the sex of hemp seedlings.
